Curious how vodka is made? Do you want to learn about the history of the Polish monopoly industry, one of the main architects of which was Jakob Haberfeld? Do you want to get to know the taste notes of various alcoholic beverages?
This and much more can be seen in the Vodka Museum of Jakob Haberfeld Story in Oświęcim. In the museum, which is located exactly in the place of the former Steam Vodka and Liquor Factory, which operated in Oświęcim since 1804.
We present the history of a family that not only became famous in the world as a significant brand of vodkas and liqueurs, but also as prominent figures for the city. Few people have known that Alfons Haberfeld was the only shareholder in the first Polish car factory in Oświęcim, “Oświęcim-Prague”. Many of the Polish celebrities such as Jan Kiepura a polish singer or Wojciech Kossak a noted polish painter drove the cars from the factory in Oświęcim.
The exhibition also tells the story of one of the two most influential Jewish families in Oświęcim. Their fates were dramatically interrupted by the outbreak of World War II and the murder of Franciszka Henryka Haberfeld, then a 5-year-old girl, in the death camp in Bełżec.
COLLECTION
As part of the exhibition, we will present you with objects that have returned to their original place, because the museum was established exactly on the premises of the former Steam Vodka and Liquor Factory. In our collection we have both factory equipment elements as well as private items from the Haberfelds’ house, which was directly adjacent to the factory. On the display you can see original and unique memorabilia such as tableware, porcelain, glass, as well as office furniture belonging to Gerhard Haberfeld, which he purchased in Vienna in 1937.
